We went through new Liberty into the old town to the Jail. Where the prophet Joseph and others were held through the miserable winter days. It was a jail, then an ice house, a new house was built over it, and the church bought it and missionaries lived in the home and held sacrament meeting in the old jail. Eventually through journals they reconstructed the jail using the same floor because it was never removed and some of the same rock. This humble jail is a sacred spot in church history. The missionaries here wanted it to not be know as a place of suffering but a place of revelation and music.
Original Key to the Jail
Sitting in front look down into the basement.
The walls were 2' rock, 1' crushed rock and 1' timbers- super thick
Looking through the basement window. Daniel couldn't reach the other side but yet a young man would pass paper and ink through the window to Joseph and another member would stand out in the cold and play his harmonica for them to hear the music.
The upper floor. With the trap door and a rope as the only way up or down. The attic also had crushed rock so no one could escape through there.
There was no metal handle on either side of the door- just this rope on the outside. The guards were locked in with the prisoners.
It was an amazing presentation and the spirit was so strong. Cinch was having a hard time sitting still but in part of the presentation it was depicting Christ talking to Joseph and Cinch sat perfectly still and listened. It was cool how they compared the jail Christ was in before he was killed and it was very very similar to this jail as well. There was a somber feeling and you could tell from such a humble place that wonderful revelation came.
