"What greater thing is there for human souls than to feel that they are joined for life - to be with each other in silent unspeakable memories." --- George Eliot

Day Three on our Journey to Florida (Part 1)

Today's adventures are going to be spilt up so the picture upload will be easier.

During our night stay in Lexington, NE a storm came that was like no other. It hit about 1:00am and woke us all up. It brought 60+mph winds, rain, and quarter size hail. We wondered if we would have a dented up truck and if all of our stuff in the bed would survive. But our prayers were soon answered and the storm passed over us. It took us til 4:00am to get Cinch settled back down and to sleep. In the morning we found our truck safe and our blue tarp and held the rain out. We headed out to Omaha, NE a 3-4 hour drive.
(Look Closely at the prices- who knew regular was more?)
We got into Omaha/Florence, NE where the pioneers had "Winter Quarters". It was a scary town- but as soon as we got out at the visitors center we felt peace.

We were greeted by senior couples and started on the tour. The talked about how Christ cried to the fishermen to put down their nets and follow him and how the pioneer did exactly that. They put down everything and followed him.

They talked about the Nauvoo temple and had the 7' version there in the center.

Cinch packed our wagon. Thank goodness for these toys they could play with. He loved driving them and packing them with our food and provisions.

They discussed how music would help lighten the mood. Josie I couldn't help but think of your playing fingers and singing voice- this violin was amazing and one that a mother played to her children nightly in winter quarters.

This was what their cabins looked like (approximately 1 1/2 of our cottage in size)

Inside there was this bed- split in 1/2 for 2 couples to share- only a sheet in between and the children would sleep on top of the bed in the little loft. While inside they read journal entries- one lady said that she had just finished cleaning her home and it was now a palace. A Palace then my cottage was even more.

The sod chimneys were actually built 1st and then the house was built by it.
This is a mock up of Winter Quarters and how huge it grew in 2 years-- no wonder Utah is full of subdivisions.

This beautiful trunk is actually Brigham Young's.

They had a model ship, train, hand cart and this covered wagon. These Oxen have been stuffed and were Massive. Look at their horns.

Some of the highlights from the center I could spend all day writing about them all.
Out front is this monument. I love the young and the old on it. A baby riding and a grandpa bringing up the rear.

The little girl even had flowers in her hand.

The baby on top.

Across the street is the temple and the Pioneer Cemetery. This statue is there in the middle. It is the one of the mom & dad burying their baby but the dad is stepping forward. Can't even imagine what it would have been like in those bitter winter months.

This temple had the most beautiful entrance look at all this work.

The handles look like real gold and carved amazingly!

After we finished at the temple we went to a park down the road to eat lunch and play. But we didn't let Cinch play because it didn't feel like a safe place in town and we were being watched.
