The lights in my parents back yard are unique and special. They were originally bought for my sister Josie's wedding. They were taken down and hung on the house at Christmas for a few years, and they re-hung for my wedding 7 years ago, since then they have stayed up. The wires have been replaced and re attached to the trees if a branch needs to come down, but they lights stay up.
I remembering dancing under them the night of my wedding with family and friends there to celebrate.
Anytime we are gathered big or small to celebrate the lights are turned on. My dad finally wired a real light switch instead of the switch in the breaker box so the grand kids could turn them on easier. To watch the grand kids dance to the record player or play games under the lights bring their magic to life.
When ever we arrive in Elwood, the lights are on to welcome us. We can see them from I-15 and their sight helps us breath the sigh of relief, we made it again. Whether it be 7 pm or 2 am Cinch will wake up on his own to see the lights. He'll spot them and get so excited that we are almost there and that they remembered to turn the lights on.
If your my sibling, it'd remind you of the 31st street Ogden off ramp, how it'd automatically wake you up that you are close to Grandma's.
How I love these lights- I'm sure my dad didn't like the bill for them 10 years ago, but after how much use they have gotten and how much the family loves them, they are so worth it. So here's to many more memories under and welcoming us "home" to the lights.
