This year 2 of my sisters and I made a pack to do a 5k, 10k, half marathon & Triathlon.
I was actually excited to do another tri, it's been 5 years since my last. Training has been a little tricky. My biking is done on the old asphalt road and the swimming I drove into Alliance twice a week to swim at a hotel pool.
The Triathlon I did was in North Platte, NE- 2+ hrs away. When I signed up I didn't think the 8:00 start time would be too bad, then two weeks before I remembered North Platte was in Central Time. To say the least 3:30 was an early wake up call. Daniel drove and luckily the boys were able to stay at home with Bubba & Annie.
I was unlucky and drew 481 out of 483. So I was the 3rd to last to enter the swim in the pool (1/3 mile swim). I started my swim 1:09 after the first draft. I was the last out of the pool and when I left on my bike, people were already crossing the finish line. It was really discouraging to be starting so late. On my bike I got into my groove. The first 7 miles of the bike were great. The last 7 were windy but I pedaled hard and hard the gears set to the highest. Then came the 5k run. I thought for sure I'd need to walk quite a bit of it but the adrenaline had me going strong and I had fueled my body much better than 5 years ago. I ran the 5k with only stopping to walk about 100 yards up hill when my legs had started to cramp. The last 1/4 mile I was able to sprint it in. Everyone else was there to cheer me in. I hit my goal of 2 hrs exactly. While I wasn't the slowest on the course- it was just discouraging with my number in the group. I had hoped to be toward the beginning or middle.
Best of all- I can't wait to TRI again.
