C-Section

On May 10th Daniel did his first ever C-section, since then he has done 2 more. Our vet students were gone- and we just had master students, which set Daniel up for the big adventure. He had watched 1 c-section last year and 2 this year and felt pretty confident.
Our foreman Mitch came up to supervise and make sure it all went good.

**Graphic Pictures follow**
The cow is shaved, scrubbed, numbed and ready for the first cut through the skin.
Then comes the cutting through 3 muscle layers, and finding the uterus.
In this picture Daniel is finishing cutting through the 3rd layer of muscle.

Pulling out the uterus, pushing the stomach forward and trying to find the calf's foot to hold on to.

They find the foot, make a small incision in the uterus, reach in, grab ahold of the foot.
After they have a good hold of the foot and leg, they make the uterus incision large enough to get the calf out but small enough to sew back up.

And out comes the calf, still alive!
After the calf is out starts the sewing.
First the uterus (pictured)
Then the 3 muscles layers, all sewn together
And, then the skin.
Daniel did great with his first c-section, his clothes didn't fair to well.
His 2nd c-section the vet professor was back and showed him some pointers and his
3rd, he was all on his own.

All 3 mamas and babies survived- which was the point.
Sometimes a 1st time mama's pelvis is just TOO small to fit the baby through, even with assistance and that's why the c-section comes into play.

This is c-section #2, if you click on it, you can see the skin sutures.

Who needs to go to vet school?
